My work is a celebration of the collective intelligence of the living world. After a childhood overshadowed by violence, I made a choice to explore interconnection and tenderness as a counter to dissociative trauma narratives. Whilst acknowledging the violence of ecocide on human and nonhuman communities, I have worked to create forms redolent of hope and a gratitude for life, creating a personal archeology of artefacts celebrating interspecies survival as a path towards a broken belonging. I have sought to honour the local as a foundation for homecoming and an opportunity to turn towards tender care of life’s diversity. Having worked in woodland as my studio over many years, my relationship with living cycles and systems has continually informed my work and I have found joy in deepening my relationship with wood as my primary material. From roots to leaf tips the forest whispers and forms emerge, shaping memories of ancestral cross species relationships as old as life itself, the underlying chatter even older and more deeply embedded into the foundation of matter. Whilst overwhelming global destruction threatens to overshadow life’s fleeting connective joys, creativity has the power to form new structures and attitudes. In making soil-to-soil sculptures in connection with the land, I hope to invite the viewer to exist fully in the moment with the work and the land, and within that temporary space to dream of the blooming of a more resilient regenerative culture.
